Getting Started Babysitting

It seems simple enough. You babysit someone else's children and you get paid. How difficult can that be right?

Babysitting someone else's children is a huge reponsiblity. The parents of the kids are trusting YOU with their children and that is something most folks don't easily do. It is up to you to take care of what the kids need and most importantly to keep them safe. Are you prepared for this?

Are you Old Enough?
Usually, in most locations, there are no laws specifying how old you have to be, to be permitted to babysit. However, usually, most parents will not leave their kids with children who are kids as well.

Babysitters ages can vary from state to state, county to county and city to city. You can check with your local county government to find out if there are laws about legal ages of babysitters where you reside.

Most parents feel you should be at least 12 or older to babysit. Babysitting training courses may be provided through many different locations. Check with your school or local YMCA for courses in your area. These courses often provide babysitting certificates of completion, excellent advice and safety instructions. Most parents prefer and feel better with a babysitter who has taken one of these courses.

A good babysitter is: mature, trustworthy, patience, safety-consciousness, organized, prepared, fun and punctual.

If you feel you have these qualities you may be ready to babysit. Of course, you should also like, and enjoy being with children.

With your parent's permission, you can now start looking for a job babysitting.

Job Ideas for 16 Year Olds

Job Ideas for 16 Year Olds

Once you are age 16 in the United States, you are legally allowed to work, yet it's often difficult for most 16 year olds to find a job. Why is that? Because even though a 16 year old is allowed to work, they still have to obtain a work permit from school, and often, they are limited in the hours per day or week that they are allowed to hold a job.

Due to these issues, many 16 year olds find that employers prefer not to hire 16 year olds in their busineses because adjusting to their varying job schedules sometimes proves to be too much of a hinderance. But, there still remains opportunities for jobs for 16 year olds.

At Oddjobs4Teens, we've provide you a great list of potential job ideas. But remember, even though you're only 16 years old, still apply at any business for a job you'd like to get. What's the worst they can do? Say No?. But, if they say yes, and you get the job, you'll be one happy hardworking 16 year old with a job!

Ask people in your community if you can mow their lawn or garden for a weekly fee.
If you live in the snowy northern states, shovel driveways.
Walk dogs and or petsit in the neighborhood.
Try being a babysitter or a nanny for families in your community.
Go to the local church or nursery and see if they need any help with their children's programs. Often they have great job ideas for 16 year olds and need your help!
If you live in an apartment complex that is privately owned, ask the manager if they need help cleaning or doing basic mainentance for a small fee.

Babysitting Activities

Babysitting Activities

If you're a babysitter looking to be really successful and find good babysitting opportunities in your neighborhood, its important to have a great list of activities.

I have a 2, 4 and 6 year old and a sitter that has fun, planned, enjoyable activities will be talked about for days on end.  My kids love crafts, or adventures, or making a youtube movie.  The key is to really play it up.  Help the kids anticipate the activity ahead of time.  This makes it seem very special.  Then make sure the activity isn't something they do every day.  For instance, instead of going on a walk, make it a scavenger hunt, where you find interesting bugs, or trees, or sticks.  Take pictures and make a scrapbook of it.

There are literally dozens of great babysitting activities, just be creative and think like a kid.  If you do it well, you will be the talk of the neighborhood and in high demand for babysitting jobs!

Good luck and make it happen!

Why is Teen Unemployment So High?

As this article talks about, Teen Unemployment is at record levels.   Is it that there is no work ethic amongst teens and young adults? or is the system stacked against them.

At OddJobs4Teens, we believe most kids WANT to work and WANT to earn money.  There is honor in a hard day's work.  But what happens often today, is that the MINIMUM WAGE is actually a harm to students looking to find jobs.  By their very nature, teens don't have much experience, don't have much in terms of skills yet and lack connections.

In the past they could get jobs as gas station attendants, movie theater ushers, office clerical assistants and all sorts of other jobs.  The pay wasn't important in these jobs, but rather the opportunity to learn valuable SKILLS and get valuable EXPERIENCE.  They learned how to show up on time.  How to answer a phone.  How to communicate.  How to speak with a customer. All sorts of skills that is hard to put a value on.

But do to the Federal Minimum Wage, businesses that ordinarily would hire these kids for 3 to 5 dollars an hour are now forced to NOT hire them because they are too expensive at 7 and 8 dollars an hour.

The result is teens DO NOT get the needed real world experience.  They DO NOT obtain the skills needed to compete and serve in today's economy.  Teen unemployment skyrockets and youth crime increases.

THANK YOU GOVERNMENT!! THANK YOU FOR LOOKING OUT FOR TODAY'S TEENS AND PRICING THEM OUT OF THE JOB MARKET!  WELL DONE!

But all is not lost.  Teens, and young adults need to take control of their own destiny and make their own paths.  Market yourself.  Find neighbors, local businesses that you are valuable.  Use our flyers, post your ads here.  Make it happen!

Another Great Babysitting Idea

I was talking to a neighbor the other day who just raves about her babysitter.  She has two children, 5 and 3 and the kids adore the sitter.

The babysitter sets up arts and crafts days.  But the key is, she let's the kids know earlier in the week tha Thursday is Arts and Crafts day.  So the kids look forward to Thursday all week.  In the kids minds its a super special day that the sitter has planned because its something out of the ordinary.

The babysitter has enthusiastic, well behaved kids to watch, the kids have a blast and the parents are ecstatic because they don't feel they are leaving their kids to boredom and just getting through the day.

If you're a babysitter, you might want to incorporate ideas like this!

Babysitting Games

Our sitter was over the house watching our three kids the other day.  And she decided to "start a business" with the kids.  They baked cookies, got out the toy cash register, made lemonade, counted up their money in their piggy bank and made signs.

She took them out on the driveway and set up their own little lemonade business for the neighbors coming home from work.  The kids learned about business, had a blast and the time flew for all of them involved.

How much more enjoyable and rewarding is this instead of simply passing the time, watching the clock in front of the television.  As a parent, I was thrilled.  A job well done by my babysitter!

Babysitting Job Ideas

Babysitting Job Ideas

There are a number of creative ways to find babysitting jobs.  Most people think of the babysitting job as simply a job where you watch kids at their house while parents go out.

It doesn't have to be this way and you can find a lot more work thinking creatively.  Consider setting up an after school art workshop.  You can sit for 3 or 4 kids for 2 hours till parents get home.  But instead of simply babysitting, it can be an arts and crafts babysitting job.  The kids don't feel your simply a babysitter, but more of a teacher and respected adult.  They don't just veg in front of the tv, but get a creative outlet.

Best of all, the parents LOVE that your a babysitter who teaches and entertains instead of simply watching the kids.  They will look at you as a true professional babysitter!

Good Luck!

After School Jobs

After School Jobs

Finding an After School Job

most high school students look for after school jobs to help pay for entertainment expenses. Use these tips to help get an edge on the competition.

Being a High School Student can be very expensive. Getting an After School Job can help cover these expenses.  There are car costs, cell phone costs, movie costs, graduation costs and all sorts of other expenses.  If a high school student is college bound, there is also the expense of the ACT/SAT exams and college applications. Many high school students decide to get an after school job or their parents require that they work to help pay for these additional costs.

High school students are typically 17 or 18 years old and able to work in many businesses. Although, competition can be stiff for part-time after school jobs. Students are competing not just with their fellow high school students, but also college students and maybe even adults looking for a second job. So how can one get that prized after school job considering all of the people competing with them?

  1. Develop an After School Job Resume - Most students are not aware that they need a resume or they don’t think it’s required for an after school job. Putting a resume together will help the potential employer realize that you are serious about your job search and make it easier for him/her to learn about you and your skills for the job. Many students are overwhelmed by resumes; however, putting a resume together is not as difficult as you initally think.
  2. Ask others to help you Find an After School Job. - Some of the best positions are found through “networking”. Networking is talking with people you know about your need for an after school job and in finding an after school job. Start by putting together a list of people you know - church members, local businesses, neighbors, coaches and teachers. Now plan out what you might say to them. Don't just say, “I’m looking for an after school job, do you know about any openings”, their response most likely will be - no. Instead, say, ‘This is my first time really looking for an after school job, do you have any suggestions or ideas to help me”, people will be more apt to help and actually develop an interest in your search. You’ll be amazed at the number of contacts you’ll get telling you about potential after shool job opportunities.
  3. Conduct After School Job informational interviews - If you really want to work after school at the library but don't know if there are any positions available, don’t give up just yet. An informational interview may assist you get in getting your foot in the door. An after school job informational interview is simply a conversation with a potential employer with the objective of gaining information about that business and maybe what opportunities might be available for an after school job. This is not the same as calling to see if the company is hiring and/or accepting after school job applications. If you say, “are you hiring”, the response will be yes or no, but if you say “I’m a high school student looking to learn more about your organization”, someone will probably be willing to talk to you. make sure to prepare your questions in advance and don’t be nervous.  People tend to be very friendly and wanting to help. Some questions you might consider are - what’s a typical after school job day like, what positions do high school students hold in your company, what do they look for in a student, and lastly, do they have anyone else they’d recommend you speak with. Finich with thanking them for taking the time to speak with you. Hopefully you will have learned quite a bit about the business and made another “networking” contact.
  4. Dress appropriately for the After School Job - Most students know to dress properly for an interview, but many make the error of wearing the wrong thing when they go to pick up and/or drop off an after school job application. For a job with Target you don’t need to wear your Easter best, but make sure that you are clean, your clothes are neat and business casual (khakis - no jeans, nice shirt or blouse - no t-shirts, and casual shoes - no old sneakers).
  5. Send after school job thank you notes - After an interview, and even an get to know you interview, be sure to send a simple thank you letter or note. People consider their time to be valuable and your saying thank you will set you apart from the other students seeking after school jobs.

Remember, whether you’re looking for a part-time or a full-time job, be sure to put your best foot forward.

Job Ideas for 15 Year Olds

Job Ideas for 15-Year-Old's

When you become 14 you can legally work in the United States, yet, it's often hard for minors to find work. Why is this? Because even though you are permitted to hold a job, you have to still obtain a work permit from your school, and there are limitations on how many hours you are allowed to work during an individual day, or full week.

Due to this, many employers don't hire minors in their businesses for jobs because working with their schedules sometimes proves to be too cumbersome. But, there remain job options.

OddJobs4Teens has provided you with a list of potential job opportunities. Remember, even though you're a minor, you are still able to apply at any business you would like to get a job at. What's the worst they can do? Say No thanks? But if you get the job, you're ready to start working at a job!.

Babysitting Jobs for Kids - Jobs for Kids

You can help your kid find the perfect job! If your teen enjoys children here are some factors to consider when deciding if a babysitting job would be a good fit for your teen.

Pros:

Babysitting is an enjoyable job if your teen enjoys kids. Your son or daughter will probably already be familiar with outings, games and crafts that children enjoy.

Training is available. The Red Cross offers babysitters classes to prepare 11 to 16 year olds for babysitting.

Depending on where the family lives, teens can earn a higher hourly wage for babysitting than some of the other jobs for teens at their age. Often, the compensation can range anywhere from a few dollars an hour to over $12 per hour.

Babysitting jobs can be scheduled around other obligations like schoolwork and extracurricular activities. Babysitting could be limited to free weekends. This is great for a teen with a busy social life.

In areas where there are lots of children, jobs are plentiful. Parents continually need babysitters for date nights, running errands, and adult social activities.

Different aged children can babysit. Your teen can begin as a mother's helper when she is younger (the parent remains at home during the babysitting job) and babysit through their pre-teen and teen years. If your teen enjoys it, he can also babysit later, even while attending college.

Babysitting will help your teen learn the valuable lesson of patience.

Your teen can often remain close by. They can babysit for neighbors and relatives that you know and feel comfortable with.

Babysitting jobs often repeat with the same families. Families that become familiar with your child will begin to call regularly.

Cons:

The number of babysitting jobs your teen gets and how much she earns will vary from job to job.

Scheduling can often be timeconsuming; sometimes calls for babysitting jobs come at the last minute. In addition, parents are usually looking for sitters at night and on the weekends, the same time that your teen may want to engage in their own social activities.

Kids get sick and are exposed to lots of viruses, so babysitters will often get sick too.

Dealing with children can at times, be difficult. If they are caring for an overactive or sick child, your teen may be exhausted.

Parents can be hard to deal with sometimes. As a parent you always want what is best for your teen, but that isn't always easy for the babysitter.

Breaking into a babysitting job can be hard if neighbors already have lots of sitters they use regularly.

How to Find a Babysitting Job:

Once your child determines a babysitting job is the right match, explore www.Oddjobs4Teens.com or visit our marketing babysitter flyers.

What Kids Learn About Money:

Negotiation: Since each family often pays a different rate, your teen will learn that different jobs and responsibilities get paid different rates. Additionally, they will have an opportunity to learn to negotiate and sell if they are asked how much they charge.

Advertising: Word-of-mouth, local bulletin boards, and websites all offer potential advertising options that your child can explore. But the best method are our Babysitting Flyers, which can be handed out in your neighborhood!

Trade-offs: There will come a time where a babysitting job and a social event are at the same time. Your teen will need to determine if earning money or having fun is more important.

Income variability: Because babysitting money is often not a steady income, they'll need to plan for it if they are counting on the money to pay a fixed cost each month.

8 Steps to Getting a Babysitting Job

·  Step 1 Determine what times in your schedule you want to devote to babysitting. You can set up some regular times, such as Monday through Friday after school, to advertise. Or you can make yourself available on a case-by-case basis, a good option if your schedule tends to fluctuate too much. ·  Step 2 Get your CPR and first aid certification if you do not already have them. Check with your local American Red Cross office or hospital to see if there are continuing aducation classes in the two skills. Knowing basic first aid and CPR makes you much more marketable and assures parents you mean business and can handle an emergency.  Also, you can request a higher pay rate! (And they WILL pay) ·  Step 3 Build a babysitting resume listing your child care experience. Make sure to include any volunteer or early work you have done with children: church nursery or Sunday school teacher/aid, camp counselor, even younger siblings you may have that you might have watched as a youth. Also include in your resume whether or not you have transportation and references. ·  Step 4 Design a flyer through Oddjobs4teens.com you can post on community, church and school bulletin boards or simply hand out around your neighborhood. We have a special section set up with premade flyers for your convenience. ·  Step 5 Redistribute the flyers to keep reminding people to use you! Also, keep some handy to hand out. You never know when you may meet a customer. ·  Step 6 Determine your pay rate. Learn what hourly rates day cares in your area are charging and ask parents you know what a reasonable fee is. Or you may decide to charge by the job. ·  Step 7 Interview the parents and meet the kids. Make sure to find out the family's rules and ask them to provide you with all emergency contact information. ·  Step 8 Accept your first job and start earning money!

How to refuse a babysitting job

Some reasons to refuse babysitting may consist of: 1. The number of children. 2. The age of a child. 3. The length of a job. 4. Extra responcibilities. 5. Difficulty getting children to mind 6. Unsafe situation / location. Politely and apologetically say: "I don't feel comfortable sitting for so many children." "I don't feel comfortable babysitting a child so young." "I don't feel comfortable sitting for such a long period of time." "I'm sorry I cant accept the job because........" OR these are also acceptable: "I'm sorry I can't sit." or "I am not available."

Tips for Reading Tutors

Be positive. Praise goes a long way with learners who struggle in reading. Provide positive feedback when correct responses are made ("Great! The word is Specific."). Be attentive. Stop learners immediately after an error. Show them what to do and provide them an opportunity to do it correctly. Try not to use the word "no." Be precise. Provide clear and direct instructions ("Say this word" rather than "Would you say it?"). Be mindful of mistakes made during the session. Record learner performance. Review anything that learners miss. Remember, learners "should say it like they know it." Be diligent. Work from the beginning to the end of the tutoring session. Be innovative. Keep tutoring sessions lively and dynamic. Be focused. Try to ignore minor misbehavior. Only recognize good behavior. Be patient. Show learners that you care about them through your commitment and encouragement. Be on time. Arrive at least 15 minutes before the tutoring session begins. Make sure plans for the session and materials are ready so the session may begin as soon as the student arrives. Be committed. Once you have begun to tutor a student, remain with that student throughout the year. Be results-oriented. Gather learner performance data on a daily basis, and chart the data (using graphs, stars, etc.) to allow a visual display of improvements made in the program.

Five tips for math tutors

1.      Guide student: A math tutor should guide a student through the solution process. Ask the student leading questions that will direct the student towards the correct steps.  Avoid doing problems for the student.  If the student cannot get the correct answer and asks for help, the tutor should look at what the student has done and try to locate the error.  Then have the student work a similar problem to make sure he/she has grasped the concept or procedure.  2.      Teach Concepts Tutoring goal should be to help students become an independent learner. In mathematics, it is important to teach concepts rather than just processes or procedures.  For example, the tutor should explain why it is important to follow the "order of operations" rule, PEMDAS, rather than just showing the student how to do it.   Understanding the concepts makes remembering the procedures easier.  3.      Encourage Students to Attend Class Some students believe getting help from a tutor is a substitute for attending class. Students having difficulty in math must realize time spent with a tutor is additional to classroom time.  4.      Address Math Anxiety Tutors will deal with students with varying degrees of math anxiety. Tutors should avoid using phrases such as, "this is easy."  Such phrases intimidate the student. If the student suffers from a high degree of math anxiety it may be helpful to refer the student to a counselor. Sometimes it is helpful to learn about the student's math background. If the tutor believes the student is enrolled in a course the tutee is not ready for, talk to the instructor.  Don't Confuse the Student! If the tutor is unsure of a mathematical procedure or concept, check with a math instructor. It is helpful to find out what approach the text or instructor is using on a particular problem. A tutor using the same technique as the text or instructor will reinforce the concept or procedure, whereas using a different approach can confuse the student.

Math Tutoring Tips

Step one:  Always look at the problem in the book. Never trust that a student has set it up correctly.  Step two:  Ask student to explain the procedure s/he is using to solve the problem. You can troubleshoot and listen for faulty logic or incorrect procedures at that time.  Step three:  Reinforce any correct procedures (e.g. "This part is done correctly.") Then identify incorrect logic and ask the student to consider what else s/he might try. You can provide a hint, but avoid explanations until after the student has attempted a guess. Step four:  To check for understanding have the student re-explain the procedure to you. Avoid asking questions like, "Does that make sense to you?" and "Do you understand now?"  Step five:  Disengage! Encourage the student to work the next problem on his/her own, but let him/her know you will check back.  Do not get drawn into working the next problem with an insecure student.  S/he needs to develop the ability to apply what s/he is learning without your supervision.
